Why we created Web Clarity Ratings

When you open a movie or a game, you usually know what you’re getting into. On the web, it’s far more chaotic. One click can take you from a calm blog to a volatile comment thread, a gentle story to a graphic image, or a personal journal to speculative trading.

Web Clarity Ratings exist to bring a little bit of that “movie rating” intuition to websites — not to sanitize them, but to label them honestly.

Our principles

  • Transparency over restriction. We inform; you choose.
  • Creator respect. Your site is your space. WCR is a label, not a leash.
  • Low friction. Ratings should take seconds, not hours.
  • Human-centered. The web is used by real people with real lives.

How this project is maintained

At this stage, UWSC is a community-driven effort. The specification is public, and feedback is welcome. Over time, we aim to invite volunteers, educators, technologists, and everyday users to help refine the guidelines.

If the project grows, we may explore forming a nonprofit entity to better support governance, accessibility, and diverse participation.
